Despite securing the NFC’s top seed, the San Francisco 49ers are opting for caution in Week 18. Christian McCaffrey, the team’s running back, will be sidelined for the regular-season finale against the Rams due to a mild calf strain, as confirmed by coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday. Shanahan expressed confidence in McCaffrey’s readiness for the NFC Divisional Round in the postseason.
McCaffrey sustained the injury in the Week 17 victory over Washington and was held out of the remainder of that game as a preventive measure.
Given the team’s secured position and McCaffrey’s pivotal role in their offense, there was little incentive for him to play, even if fully fit. As the driving force behind the 49ers’ offensive dynamics and with the first-round bye locked in, he will benefit from nearly three weeks of rest before the Divisional Round.
This season has seen McCaffrey’s exceptional performance, amassing a career-high of 1,459 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, alongside 564 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns. His contributions are expected to garner substantial recognition in the race for the league’s most prestigious individual award.
